The Dangers of Sedentary Lifestyle: Why We must Break our Bondage from the Couch

Almost all of the total human population adheres to the sedentary lifestyle. Only a few remaining tribes (or the hyper-active athletes of the world) are exempt from this sweeping generalization. The dawn of this lifestyle coincided with the Agricultural Revolution. The said development caused the surplus of food. The surplus, in turn, freed a lot of the population from food generating activities. Thus, the human race embraced the Sedentary Lifestyle.

The Sedentary Lifestyle has many benefits. Our bodies are not strained unlike our ancestors who must spend almost the whole day in search for food. Of course, the adverse effects of Sedentary Lifestyle is well documented. The lack of exercise, for one, has created a lots of ailments. Obesity is on the rise, and it is taking its toll on the humanity as a whole.

The adverse effects of Sedentary Lifestyle is magnified upon book lovers and readers. The love for books must be encouraged in every way, to be sure, but too much may cause us to eschew exercise and solidify our connection with our couches and chairs. As stated above, the lack of exercise may lead to obesity and other illnesses.

Of course, generalizing the whole “book lovers” segment of our population is futile for there are book lovers who are also athletes. However, there are also those who focus too much in reading without exercising. This portion of people maybe at risk.

Lack of Exercise and the Silent Symptoms

As stated above, the Sedentary Lifestyle brings with it some symptoms of illnesses. Obesity is the natural effect of lack of exercise that comes with the Sedentary Lifestyle. Obesity, in turn, may lead to heart failures when linked with rising cholesterol levels. However, there is so much more that inactivity may cause. For one, neglect may arise from inactivity. Neglect of the body will always have repercussion.

Neglect means that we will not be able to prevent diseases, especially the ones were the symptoms are silent until it has ascended on the later stages. Some types of cancers only manifest sufficient symptoms in the later stages. Usually, the doctors will not be able to help when it does. Chemotherapy is the common measure in cancer cases.

Another silent symptom is the hernia. Hernias are caused when organs exploit a gap in the surrounding muscles. Hernias usually cause excruciating pain, which can be mitigated by medications. However, like cancer, the only procedure that can end a hernia is an invasive operation.

Another ailment that can be caused by inactivity and lack of exercise that is brought about by Sedentary Lifestyle is Gastritis. Gastritis is an ailment of the stomach. It is caused by inflammation in the linings of said organ. If left unchecked, Gastritis can also cause excruciating pain. There are many types of Gastritis but Type A is the one caused by lack of exercise. Gastritis cure can be achieved by antacids, NSAIDS or by eating healthy food.

The love for books must be fostered by anyone. Reading books expand our horizons. However, we must not fall prey to the adverse effect of Sedentary Lifestyle, of which book lovers are more susceptible. Never forget to exercise. And never forget to read.
